For a first family visit, build around a few good bases. Choose the southern coast and Addo for a road trip, or connect Cape Town with Greater Kruger or Madikwe for a trip centered on safari. Leave space for quiet mornings and weather changes.

September–October is a useful compromise for whales and a mixed trip. May–September generally favors Kruger wildlife visibility. Cape Town summers are warmer; no single season optimizes the whole country.

Plan health advice around the actual route

Kruger and parts of northeastern South Africa have malaria risk. A travel-health clinician can advise for your children’s ages and exact itinerary. Check routine vaccines and any transit-related entry requirements.

Budget in rand and compare like for like

Price labels are relative, not live quotes. Check family occupancy, meals, park conservation fees, transport and activities. A self-catering rest camp and a safari lodge package include very different things.

Leave room for the journey

Use daylight for unfamiliar road transfers, confirm routes with your accommodation, reserve child seats and keep a quiet day after long-haul arrival. Check current travel and entry advice for your nationality.
