When to go
Late April through May and mid-September through October
Spring and fall are the strongest statewide compromise for living-history walks, gardens, mountain trails, scenic drives, and city museums without peak summer heat and humidity.
Summer is peak season for beaches and theme parks. October foliage weekends can also crowd Shenandoah and Blue Ridge roads, so reserve early or visit on weekdays.
Virginia has five climate regions. Mountain roads can close for winter weather, summer is humid with thunderstorms, and Atlantic hurricane conditions can disrupt coastal plans from late summer into fall.

Start with immersive galleries and a panoramic theater, then move outside to a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm with hands-on demonstrations.
